Research

Chlorella:
  • Single cell, green algae
  • Contains chlorophyll a and b pigments in its chloroplast
  • Photoautotroph: a producer that makes its own food through photosynthesis
  •  Algae can be used to make fuel, fertilizer, cosmetics, food, and animal feed.

 Chloroplasts:

  •  are organelles in the algae cells that conduct photosynthesis.
  • contain photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll, which captures the energy from sunlight.
  • stores energy molecules Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) while freeing oxygen from water during photosynthesis.

 Wavelength:
  •  Chloroplasts are influenced by light, color, and intensity
  • Less intense light causes chloroplasts to spread
  • More intense light causes chloroplasts to stack
  • Longer Wavelength has also shown to cause the chloroplasts to spread, such as light through a red filter
